Feeling Like Fall

Monday, September 23, 2013

It's starting to feel a lot like fall around here and I couldn't be more pleased. Of course fall means sweaters and jeans, crayons and books but it also means birthdays and oatmeal cookies and getting back to a routine. And even though many of our fall days are blazing hot, over this past weekend there was fortunately a nice chill in the air. Fall means birthdays so it was fitting that Friday started with a belated celebration for Papa. We had pizza and spice cake (a spice cake a little too dense for our liking, so note to self - don't make that again) and it was a birthday a billion times better than the one last year. And we're all thankful for that. Saturday and Sunday were filled with quick errands and small chores as we're figuring out pretty quickly that with two little ones it's much easier to stay close to home on the weekends and leave the family adventures for another day. I've been thumbing through my cookbooks again, something I feel like I haven't done in forever, looking for comforting meals to make in the upcoming months. As delicious as all those tomatoes are, I am most certainly ready to trade them in for another season's flavor. So, on Saturday I roasted carrots, potatoes and wild salmon and on Sunday I made a large pot of lentil soup. Nana and Papa came over to enjoy Sunday's shananigins and I used decent napkins and it really felt like fall. And with the days getting shorter and the light no longer lingering into the evening, bedtime can be moved up a little earlier and maybe, just maybe, we can have a little bit of our evenings back. There's nothing more that I love than getting back to a good routine and September always feels like the best time to start a new one.

And completely unrelated, a few photos too cute not to remember.
